We Tried Playing Dungeons & Dragons

It’s a lot harder than it looks.

Taylor and I were standing in the board game aisle of Target, looking for a present for our roommate. After picking up a few duds and a handful of potential winners that went back on the shelf thanks to their outrageous price tag, she found it: The Essentials Kit for Dungeons and Dragons.

Taylor had been looking for a reason to jump into D&D for awhile, I always had a moderate interest, and we were taking a gamble on our roommate.

He was down and after a few weeks of our schedules being out of sync, the stars aligned and we got the chance to bust it out.

To prepare, we watched a few YouTube videos and made a few Google searches. These well meaning authorities made it sound so painless! One of the videos even said something along the lines of “All you need is the dice, some pencils and some paper!”

Sounds easy, right?

It’s not.

For starters, the rulebook is 64 pages long. D&D pros may scoff as this is relatively nothing to the expansive rules and regulations of a standard game, but to be fair, I’ve set aside games because the rulebook had…
