I Bought a Hot Pot, I Have Lots of Thoughts

Why not? I’ll give it a shot.

I’m not usually at a loss when it comes to eating. In fact, I would consider myself a chow down expert. The term “foodie” has gone in and out of flavor, but I could wear it with pride. Needless to say, I know my way around a plate and rarely have a problem cleaning one up.

When I first sat in front of a hot pot, I was stupefied.

You may ask: What is a hot pot? I was also unsure. This, naturally, being Taylor’s idea.

“Hot pot is a communal eating experience, thought to have been invented in Eastern Asia, in which patrons order different ingredients to boil inside of a large simmering pot of broth, which is placed on the center of their table.” Tessa Newell

“While the broth is simmering, the ingredients are placed into the pot and cooked right at the table. The lucky diners fish out the ingredients with netted ladles and dip them into a sauce.” Mary Chao

You’re reading a diary encapsulating our year of trying one new experience every week — so I clearly had never tried this before. We arrived at the restaurant, were quickly seated at our table — a safe distance from other diners, and the meal began quickly.
